New minimally invasive surgical method for Pancoast tumor

A few months ago at the Beau Site Clinic in Bern, Professor Kocher performed the world’s first minimally invasive robot-assisted removal of a Pancoast tumor (a lung cancer tumor that grows out of the lung into the upper rib and grows around the vessels and nerves to the arm).

Previously, such procedures were only carried out using large surgical accesses with splitting of the sternum or a large incision in the chest with cutting through ribs and various muscle layers.

This new surgical method with the robot could become the new standard of treatment for such difficult-to-remove tumors.

As it has never been performed or described in this way before, the new surgical technique has now been published in the international literature.
